Healthy Hints – Tinnitus

The good news is about 1 in 7 get Tinnitus and, therefore, many things have been tried and tested over time. Experience has shown some ideas to help:
*Don’t smoke – smoking increases risks for permanent damage
*Treat blood supply issues like heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes
*Treating insomnia, allergies, anxiety and depression will also improve tinnitus
*Believe it or not, a hearing aid can help suppress tinnitus

Background noise is good if not too loud
Silence is usually a bad choice

There are some medications that can cause it…watch out for:
Aspirin, NSAIDs like Ibuprofen and Naproxen, aminoglycoside antibiotics like Gentamicin, cisplatin (Platinol), vancomycin (Vancocin), loop diuretics like furosemide (Lasix), valproic acid (Depakene, Depakote), quinine in high doses

Of course, you can always come in for acupuncture so we can try to figure out the cause, as Tinnitus can be due to degeneration of the ear, nerve damage issues etc.  We can even suggest a Chinese natural herb to take, which again depends on the cause.  There is hope!
